Can facial hair be permanently removed?
A suitable laser will permanently remove facial hair. Whereas, IPL may damage the surrounding skin and should avoid. Also, IPL doesn’t penetrate the hair follicle deep enough to kill the hairs root.
Light coloured fair hair, better known as vellus hair, is difficult to remove, not impossible. But nine times out of ten, you will need an alternative treatment, such as electrolysis. Electrolysis treats each hair individually, so may not be suitable for large areas.
It is always advisable to know the cause of your excess hair, especially if you are very hairy as this could be health related. Visit our Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome page to explore this in more depth.
How to remove hair permanently?
To permanently remove unwanted hair, the root must be killed to prevent regrowth. The only permanent methods to achieve this are laser hair removal and electrolysis. The light energy from the laser is attracted to the melanin in the hair and penetrates to the hairs root killing it. Melanin determines the colour of your hair, and the darker it is, the more the lasers light energy is attracted to it. As a rule of thumb, the darker the hair, the easier it is to remove with a laser permanently. Whereas, light coloured hair is often difficult to permanently remove.
Electrolysis uses electrical current to remove the unwanted hair by killing the root permanently. Unlike laser, electrolysis will work on both light and dark hair. However, with electrolysis, each strand needs to be treated individually, which makes it more suitable for small areas.
What are the different types of laser?
Firstly remember, just because its called a laser it doesn’t mean it is! Many Beauty Salons and low-quality clinics advertise laser treatments when in fact its an IPL (Intense Pulse Light) machine. To put this into context, we use a laser for hair removal and an IPL for Skin Rejuvenation! However, in skilled and experienced hands, some of the better quality IPL systems can remove hair well. We guarantee our treatments because our Soprano Ice Platinum Laser works!
