Laser hair removal is a top-rated and effective solution for unwanted hair. The light energy will kill the hair follicle ensuring that the hair is unable to regrow. But what are the risks and are there any side effects. Generally speaking, Laser Hair Removal is very safe in the hands of a highly trained laser technician. However, before embarking on any treatment it is wise to do your research, in this article, I will highlight some of the areas you need to consider.
In our laser hair removal clinic, we would not treat anyone during pregnancy. That’s not because we know it’s dangerous there doesn’t appear to of been any scientific studies on the subject carried out, so there is no data. But our view is we would not take the chance of harming either the mother or the unborn child.
What’s the best Laser for hair removal?
A laser is a machine there are different types and manufacturers. There are good quality machines, and then there are lower quality systems. The better quality machines will tend to give you the best results. In our laser hair removal clinic, we use the Soprano Ice Platinum hair removal laser. This laser is award winning and is the gold standard for hair removal.
What’s the difference between an IPL and a laser?
Intense Pulse Light (IPL) machines are very different to lasers. A laser uses a focused beam of light energy whereas an IPLs light energy is more scattered like a light bulb.
In our laser hair removal clinic, we use IPL for skin rejuvenation, not hair removal.
Does skin type & hair colour affect laser hair removal?
Yes is the simple answer, lasers are attracted to dark colours, so they work best with darker hair and tend not to be as successful with light hair.
People with light skin tend to be more prone to sunburn as they have less pigmentation in their skin that people with darker skin. As lasers use concentrated light energy lighter skin may burn, and darker skin could suffer pigmentation damage and appear lighter.
Before any treatment, the laser technician will do a patch test to see how your skin reacts.
Is laser hair removal painful?
Most laser treatments are painful unless the laser has a pain free mode like the Soprano Ice Platinum laser that we have in our laser hair removal clinic. To reduce the pain, the technician will either apply ice to the surface of the skin before the treatment. Or will use a separate cooler to blow cold air onto the treatment area.
Goggles should be worn to protect the eyes from the light energy. Each laser operates on different frequencies, and there is specific eye protection for each machine. Please make sure you’re wearing the right goggles.
What are the potential side effects?
Most, if any side effects will usually be very mild following laser treatment. The technician will have set the power levels and frequency to your skin type. However, some people may experience slight redness and irritation. Along with dryness, both of these are temporary and can be relieved by applying ice or moisturiser.
In very extreme cases some people may see a lightening of the skin (pigmentation damage). These tend to fade away over time as the skin returns to normal.
Can I get burnt?
Burns and blisters are possible but unlikely, providing the technicians follow the correct protocols. You should always use a reputable laser hair removal clinic.
